Persepolis is about the amazing story of a young girl, Marjane Satrapi, whom growing up in Iran around the time of the Islamic Revolution. It also shows how she grows up in a conservative mind set society but at the same time, she is a very active, naughty and outgoing girl who listens to Western music which was of course banned in her country by then.
I never thought such movie as Persepolis can actually touches my heart. Part of it is because i can actually link part of it to my life as well. What Marjane has gone through actually is what i went through or what i am still going through at this stage of my life now. Starting from the part where she leaves her hometown to Vienna, Austria. It feels exactly like how it is when i left my hometown, Sarawak to come to Kuala Lumpur all alone. It is exactly like what people say, " When the East meets the West." Having to go through tremendous changes in life, meeting different people and living in a totally different society is definitely not a very smooth process from the start.
Everything in the movie, is all about how she goes through each and every different stages in her life. From being a kid, to leaving the hometown and be independent, meeting the wrong guys, falling in and out of love and having to commit in a marriage and later, divorce. The desire to fit in, love, and being loved; the feeling of belonging to many places at once but none at all is what she really wants. It is all concerned with the state of exile, as we can see how Marjane tries to fit herself into different social scenes (nihilistic punk, groovy disco, anarchic hippie), hopelessly frustrates identity formation.
Apart from that, i totally agree with one of her grandma's sayings to her, which goes like: "Freedom always has a price." We ought to understand and know the limitation of our freedom and the consequences of our doings. The part which shows how she parties and clubs and it seems like she has forgotten about her own root and who she is, her grandma comes into her thought, more or less, pulls her back from going beyond the border line.
Ultimately, the ending of the movie shows that she actually has found her true self and her own distinct. It is a form of encouragement for all the viewers out there as we have to have faith in ourselves and everything we do because one of these days, everything will be paid off because after all, life is not as bad as it is.
